MARCH 2010 A+ PLAN NEWSLETTER
BY AMANDA WINTERS, FOUNDER OF THE A+ PLAN

Namaste
It was the end of yoga class and we were all just laying there, relaxing our bodies before the fluorescent lights turned on and the kickboxing ladies stormed in. The yoga teacher spoke slowly to us, helping us fade into a dream-like state of mind, when I heard a statement that awakened my soul while maintaining my physical state. She said, "The world can wait."

The two minutes of restfulness we were "allowed" at the end of class were two minutes that most people do not allow themselves each day. Personally, I CHERISH those two minutes I receive whenever I am able to attend that class. "The world can wait." Hearing the murmur of ladies outside the room, I thought, "Can it? Can it really wait?" I would MAKE it wait. I would allow myself those two minutes and relax.

Why is it so difficult to allow ourselves a few minutes of pure silence and relaxation every single day? I have found myself CRAVING silence lately, and not the kind during sleep, more the meditative kind. In the past few months, I have found yoga to be a NECESSARY rather than just one of my exercise routines. Allowing the body to stretch, calm, and circulate blood flow energizes, invigorates, tones and relaxes simultaneously.

There are so many reasons why we seem to need silence. We work harder and longer hours than ever before, we allow thoughts about the past and the future to constantly inhabit our brains, and, like anything else, we crave what our bodies need. If we don't allow ourselves some "me time," we will start to crave it.

I thought this quote appropriate, from p.244 of the book, "Small Change" by Susan and Larry Terkel:
"One thing we can never change is our past. What we can change, however, is the hold our past has on our lives. Here's some good news. Scientific research has demonstrated that you can change your memories of the past by learning to be more selective about what you remember. We are not talking about serious tragedies and transgressions here but the everyday throughts that often fill our memories. So get in the habit of choosing to remember the best parts."

And to continue to relax our minds, from p.242:
"For every problem under the sun
There is a solution
or...there is none.
If there be one, try and find it.
If there be none, never mind it."

Start today. Allow yourself just two minutes a day to relax your mind, body and soul. You'll see yourself appreciating everything around you more, speaking slower and calmer, and actually allowing your mind to stir up some more creativity. Remember this quote, "The world can wait," and enjoy life to the fullest. Namaste.

Great thoughts! I agree that we should all take a couple minutes a day for reflection!
