Emily,
I have asked my doctor the same question when I had my prep test. She doesn't think that there is a phsycal relationship between coffee and pregnancy, but her first kid was bared coffee free and when she bared her second she totally forgot about the less-coffee thing. Two kids are both healthy and pretty, except the second one is more naughty/energetic ... not sure if this is caused by drinking coffee. What do you think?
I really don't think it matters, as long as you are not drinking excessive amounts of coffee. I have friends who abstained from everything during pregnancy and others who ate sushi, drank some coffee and even an occassional glass of wine. All of our kids are just fine. Kids have different personalities. I don't think you can attribute those to drinking a little coffee while pregnant.
Study has shown a positive correlation between caffeine and miscarriage. If you're an avid coffee drinker, it's best to avoid it. I'm not sure if there are developmental effects.
That said, when my (breastfed) son was newborn and I drank very strong tea (not even coffee), he became very cranky. I ended up totally abstained from caffeine until he was 6 months old. Even now at 8 months old, I only drink decaf coffee, not regular.
Alcohol is an absolute no-no during pregnancy! It passes directly into baby and damages the growth of his/her organs, especially brain (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome)! No health organization published a safe level of alcohol consumption for pregnant women.

It's very easy to get caught up in the what to have and what not to have rules of pregnancy. Unfortunately, the rules change all the time. When I was pregnant with my son, I was reminded of what my parents' generation did while they were pregnant. My mother drank at least two pots of coffee a day. There are also mothers now who do drugs and abuse their bodies while pregnant and their babies turn out fine. I'm not saying that this is what you should do, but this example eased my mind about the two sodas I was drinking a day.
Do what you're comfortable with. I had to have caffeine while I was pregnant with my son. I was working from 3 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. and had an hour commute to and from work. I had to drink caffeine to stay awake. So talk to your doctor and do what you feel comfortable with, but don't overly stress yourself about it.
I drank atleast 2 cups of coffee a day when I was pregnant with my 1st daughter. She was born at 33 weeks, but not because I drank coffee but rather I had preeclampsia. Now she's a healthy 20 month old. I am now almost 27 weeks pregnant with my 2nd daughter and I only drink coffee every once in awhile. This little girl is growing just fine as well. I think coffee will have the same side affect as any other caffeine in your pregnancy...which is little to none.
