Hi ladies,
My baby is less than 1 month old and she has been spitting up various quantity of milk a few times each day after some feedings. I have read online that some babies spit up because they overeat or that they move too much after feeding. I have been trying to vary the amount of milk per feeding and frequency and haven't been successful in preventing the spit up. For example, now I make sure that her feeding is at least 2 hours apart but not greater than 3 hours. I feed her 2.5-4 oz of milk per feeding. Nevertheless, it is quite difficult to know when she is hungry, how much to feed each time and for how long not to move her after feeding. What has been your experience in this area? I hope to hear some of your experiences so I can learn from you all!
Thanks!
Joanna

Sounds like you are doing all the right things with monitoring his feeding intake. My DS is 3.5 weeks old and we are experiencing the same issues. One thing we do is to burp him really well (usually 2-3 good burps) and we make sure he remains in an upright position for 30minutes after a feeding. One article I read said that a pacifier helps produce saliva which can settle a baby's stomach. My DS doesn't always want a pacifier, so I don't force the issue. My doctor assures me that most babies out grow this.
Good luck!

It was so bad for a while, he started to lose weight. It is so unnerving as a first-time mother and I often felt like I wasn't doing the right thing. Just keep trying those different things. As she gets bigger it will start to stay down more and more. Some things that started to work for me: 2-3 ounces every two hours. Holding him perfectly still and upright for as long as he'd let me and then he even slept in his carseat because it kept him vertical enough.
Our son is now 11 years old...he is a happy, healthy, active kid, and I NEVER thought he would stop spitting up...but he did.
Hang in there...you are doing all the right things!!!!

Hi Katie and Meagan,
Thanks for your reply. I now finally understand the heartbreak feeling of a mother when she sees her child spitting up. I made another mistake today as I held her upright (in a sitting position) for about 20 minutes after feeding but changed her diaper afterwards. She ended up spitting up quite a bit of milk on the changing table. I think I have to lengthen the time that I keep her upright and resist the temptation of changing her diaper right after feeding. Because changing diaper often means the baby moving and lying down.
I will continue to modify my way of doing this and hopefully it will be OK soon!
Will keep you guys posted...
Jo
