My son definitely developed the strong-willed gene that runs in all sides of the family. Everything is starting to become a fight -- brushing teeth, changing diapers, eating, sleeping, even getting out of the door.

What are some of your tricks for overcoming the strong will of a toddler?

How do you get them to not fight when its time to brush their teeth?
It is SO important that they brush. My granddaughter was on WIC and they had apple juice and grape juice everyday. Even though we watered it down, she got 6 cavaties because she would sometimes fall asleep before brushing at night. She loves water the most but the sugar and acids in the little bit of juices did so much damage to her teeth. She had 2 pulled before starting kindergarten. We now strictly enforce the brushing. You can have your little ones lay down on the bed and watch TV and brush their teeth if they don't want to do it themselves. Or have them brush while you brush. Try 3 times a day if possible. No sticky gummy candies or vitamins either that are gummy, those stick to their teeth and start decay. Lots of fruit and veggies, they really do love them and is best for their health overall. She now uses our flouride toothpaste and loves it. Don't use the store brands, they are too harsh for their teeth. We use one with Tea Tree Oil in it which keeps your gums healthy too.
Where do you get the toothpaste with Tea Tree Oil?

One thing that has helped us when this struggle began was giving them choices. Maybe by taking him to the store and picking two toothbrushes for him, ask him which one he wants. I explain everything as much as possible to my kids. They seem very receptible about it. Even if they don't understand it all they know their opinion and feelings are being taken into consideration. We encourage them to brush when we do. At first we let them try to mimic us and one day tell him here let me help you so you can do better and you help them by holding their hands and showing them the movements.
