When I do sit up, my neck always hurts after around 30 crunches. I have tried not raising my body too much and only bending until I feel tight in the stomach. Nevertheless, my neck still hurts after a while. I wonder what is the proper way to do sit ups? Does those sit up machines work? They certainly don't cause the same neck pain. But not everybody has situp machine at home...
Please advise!

Coni gives great advise! I just always make sure I am focusing on my abs, that way I am working out my ab muscles and not using my neck. I have also found that loosly clasping my hands and holding my outstretched arms in front of me helps, as well.
I agree with Joanna. The ab rollers do most of the worst, making the crunch less effective. If you aren't doing crunches the correct way, you can really hurt your neck. It's so hard because I'd really have to SHOW you, like I do with my clients. I suggest working your abs in other ways than just crunches. There are so many exercises out there!

I bought the BENDER METHOD, it is a dvd and ball that extends your back to do a more effective workout and is only about $12. I got it for my daughter after she had her baby. For me, I use the ABLOUNGER, you can buy it at a sports store for about $100 because my back would hurt from being on the floor and the ABLOUNGER supports your neck and head and back. They both work if you use them.
Thanks so much all for your pointers and ideas! I will try to follow Coni's instruction tonight and see if it helps, I think my problem is my head bending upward too much, and as Joanna said, I am not focusing on my abs all the time..:(

The abs machine I was mentioning are those I see in the gym. I sit up straight and bend forward with the weight adjusted. I do feel my abs burning but the effectiveness seems less than doing the natural way...

Thanks Evelyn for your suggestion!
The BENDER METHOD seems pretty affordable, what is the main difference between that and ABLOUNGER?
It seems like these are very good alternatives to doing normal situps, I guess especially for people who feel pain if lying on the back? I sometimes have that problem too so I need to use my yoga mat as cushion.
