I have been following an exercise routine (2-3 times a week) since I was in high school. After marriage, however, I have been trying hard to keep this routine going. There seems to be so many things to do and it is easy to get side tracked. To add onto it, as a family, it is not only important for myself to exercise regularly but also, I need to motivate my husband to do the same. However, for someone who doesn't exercise at all and having different time schedules, it is hard to get him started and to build a routine. I think this applies to many other wives out there, please share your suggestions so we can all try it out.

Hi Coni,

Yes, I definitely think first off is to stick to a consistent schedule myself. I get side tracked easily these days with work and it is hard to follow a routine. Luckily, I made myself go to a step class today and I think I can get back on track. In fact, I love exercising because it makes me feel more energized.
I just recently started to do yoga with my husband once every week and so far he is able to go (most of the time:)). However, the classes are quite expensive and once a week is probably not enough for him:(

So did you start by going to the gym with your husband? Does he go by himself now?

BTW, can you tell me a little more about beachbody coach?

Hi Joanna-

My experience, both personally and with my clients, is that the most effective way to motivate is to stay consistent yourself and lead by example. Is there any way you could at coordinate your schedules at least a few times a week? Maybe if you got the ball rolling he would stick with it?

I know what motivated my husband was when I started getting more definition then he had ;)

Are there any sports or activities he particularly enjoys?

Hi

I am a psychologist and fitness coach and the first piece of major advice that I can give to anyone looking at motivating their male partner is ..... (listen closely)....... they are a different species!!!!

1) What motivates us, does not motivate them!
2) How we think, is sooooo differently from them!
3) Our emotions can and generally are different from theirs!
4) If it is not their idea, it is not a good idea!

Because of all of all of the above, I am going to get my relationship partner and my business partner (both male...god help me) to help me, help you. Both of them have the inside information and especially my business partner, is exceptional at the excuse and sabotage reasons as to why not to diet or exercise.

Look out girls or should I say....look out guys, as you are just about to get several valuable tips on how to motivate that male.

Look out for our next response. If you have any particular issues or questions, just let me know and combined, we will answer them for you.

Until next time....

Hi Kellee,
I think you have some good points about the fact that what motivates me is very definitely different than what motivates my husband. The whole keeping fit thing has not been high on his priority list. Also, I agree that if it is not his idea and if he doesn't agree with it, then it is hard to keep it going. So how can a wife helps her husband in this area (in a subtle way) that doesn't necessarily involve pushing him to do exercise?

Feeling puzzled and really look forward to your next post!
Thanks for the advise Kellee!

Hi Joanna, I get up 30 minutes before the rest of the family and either start on my Gazelle by Tony Little or my 6 week body makeover! My husband just started back on the rower he bought me 2 years ago, I have been asking him to just do 10 minutes a day and now it is day 2 for him. We are in our 50's, we eat healthy and take very good supplements but we lack on the exercise area til recently. With the deaths of Michael Jackson and Billy Mays in their 50's, it is important for everyone to exercise, eat healthy and take supplements. We have very good physicals every 2 years, but knowing that heart disease and colon cancer are the #1 and #2 killers, we are making it a point to get that much needed exercise in too! The best gift you can give your family is the gift of good health!

Hi Evelyn,
Definitely, I think exercise is a life long habit and it is never too late to get into it. I have started exercising since I was in high school and never really stopped since then. It was tough sometimes to keep going though. As for motiviating my husband, I think doing just a little bit, 10 mins a day is a good idea because that doesn't take much time but it helps him to build that into an habit. I will probably try that and get him to do some situps or something everyday:)! Maybe it is also helpful if we do it together!
