So I've been moving my blog to a new server, and my goodness has it been one lesson after another.

I wanted to offer a few tips before moving to a new server or blog hosting service:

1. Have a back-up plan when you run into problems. I tried to do too much at once. I went to a new server and to a new hosting service (from Wordpress to Joomla). It's been one lesson after another. I wish I would have parked my blog somewhere to let people know what's going on.

2. Don't do it during the holidays. Yes, I should have known better.

What lessons can you pass on to those building blogs of their own? I know we've all learned things along the way. I'm going to be posting a big post with the lessons I've learned as soon as I get the new site up. It's about 80 percent done.

Thanks for the tips and be sure to give us a link when you're up and running :)
Hi Ivy,
Thanks for the tips. I am actually looking to move from blogspot in the future. If you don't mind me asking, why did you decide to leave Wordpress? That is where I was planning on moving to (if I ever figure everything out since I am not the most tech savvy person).
Yes, I'm moving the new hosting. It's quite tedious. Why did you move from WP to Joomla, WP is the best blogging platform.

For me, wordpress is pretty limited. The new site is more than a blog. I'm featuring graphic designers and musicians, and will soon be adding my own graphic work. So I wanted the freedom that joomla offers as far as site design and functionality. I also wanted to learn more coding. I found myself getting frustrated with Wordpress' limitations and always having to code around what I wanted to do. But, I agree, WP is a great blogging platform.

okay Ivy, I look forward to your posting. BTW, what a nice blog you have. I started my blog 6 months ago using WP and Google indexed WP blog pretty fast. My blog, http://resourcesformomsandkids.com .
Don't worry, I'm using Wordpress blog too.

What's mistery linky inside your blog? I want to register but I am not sure what it is, no further detail provided. Thanks

Was this for me? The Mr Linky is a free linkshare widget you can put inside your posts for others to post their links in. I found it at: http://www.blenza.com/linkies/ You can upgrade for paid ones with more features, but I just use the free one.
I guess it will always be a work in progress. Did you keep a diary while doing the upgrade? It would great if you could do a series of posts about it or even a ebook. I also would like to move to a different hosting service one day. I have a domain that I bought from godaddy. As soon as I created Think Spin, I signed up for a domain with the same name at godaddy.com.

I'm using my blog as a platform for whatever I decide to do with my writing in the future, which may include writing another novel (revised the first one 3 times then decided I hated the protagonist). I'm working on a children's picture book right now a la Dr. Seuss rhyme scheme and working on a draft of a parenting gift book. I also write dark short stories and satire. Had one dark short story published in print, Shroud Magazine, and have had several humorous essays published in print as well as online.
I agree that everything with blogs is a learning experience! Thanks for sharing. What is website?
