Hello everyone! So I am down from 4 feedings to 2 feedings/day and it's going really well. I wanted to ask if any of you have been through this yet. I was sick for the first three months of nursing (breast infections), but since I've been fine and he's almost a year old. I am scared of getting infections again, so if anyone has any advice, I would be so appreciative. I also need to know if anyone has tried giving goat's milk because I was thinking of doing that before giving the more-allergic cow's milk. Thanks!

Hi Amanda - I just wanted you to know that you're not being ignored. I can't help you out, because it's been too long since my kids were babies - I can't remember what I did. As far as the goats milk, I have no idea. I would recommend discussing all of this with your pediatrician, however.
Thanks so much, Joanna! I have discussed everything with my pediatrician, but they're all so different in their beliefs and I'm very natural, unlike the medical field, so I know from experience that we don't have the same beliefs on all of the foods given to babies.
Hi Amanda!

Sorry it's taken me so long to comment. My lap top shorted out and had to spend a few days in the Apple hospital... ugh! Of course, when I got it back it has been formatted. So I've been transferring all of my data back onto it and reloading up programs.

I don't have any experience with goats milk, but I was lactose intolerant growing up. There is a milk that is lactose free. Is your son allergic to milk or is this just a precaution?

Weaning... I nursed my son for 14 months and I was very lucky to not have too hard of a time weaning. Do you know why you were getting the breast infections? I'm so sorry you went through this!

Here is how I weaned myself from breastfeeding to cut down on the pain. You may want to ask your doctor for some advice too since you've already experienced the breast infections. The first thing I did was cut down on the feedings, which you're already doing. We went straight to the sippy cups with the straws because I didn't want to have to wean him from too many things, and he loved sippy cups from day one.

When I decided I was done completely (had my son completely weaned) I would go as long as I could without pumping. The first day it hurt, but then after that it wasn't too bad. I would just go as long as I could and then pump. I was pumping extra bottles on top of nursing, so I was quite the milk factory. But surprisingly it only took a few days to not have to pump at all anymore. It got my body off it's natural milk-making rhythm and eventually it just stopped all together. When I didn't hurt anymore, I stopped pumping altogether.

I hope that helps some.
I found a link that may help with the breast infection part of your question:

Thanks so much everyone!!!!
Hi Amanda,
Just wondering how you are doing with this? I wonder if cow's milk is good for babies because like what you said, I have heard other cases when babies get allergies from drinking cow's milk...
Keep us posted.

Thanks so much everyone!!!!
I'm actually doing okay so far! I'm down to 1 feeding in the morning - yay! I went from 4 to 3 feedings/day in a week, and a week from 3 to 2 feedings, and then went a little longer (about a week and a half) before going down to 1 feeding. The first morning going from 2 to 1 feedings, I was SUPER full, but the next morning was just fine.

I spoke to my pediatrician's business associate today since she didn't call me back yesterday and she told me that goat's milk isn't as nutritious as cow's milk, but cow's milk is always being promoted even though it has tons of hormones (unless it's organic), so I am cautious in listening to her. I am going to try goat's milk tomorrow. My baby always takes a liquid vitamin daily as well and eats super healthy, so he's getting enough vitamins....not worried.

Thanks everyone!
I'm not worried about the calcium issue since I work in nutrition and make sure Aiden gets all of the nutrients he needs, but I wasn't sure if anyone else had tried it. I have been giving him half goat's milk and half enriched rice milk, and he's been enjoying it (yay!). I didn't want to give formula, which is why I soley nursed until he was about 11 months and 1 week. Then I gave him frozen breast milk, but I ran out, and I'm weaning myself, so I can't pump. It's a tough situation, but at least I haven't gotten sick yet! I don't seem to be producing as much now, but I'm scared to go to the next step of cutting back to every other day. I'm doing once a day in the morning right now. I know I have to stop at some point, and it's best for me so I can take my "normal" vitamins and everything, but I feel a little bit badly for him since he likes it ;) Thanks everyone! My baby's a year on Sunday!!!! :)
I just wanted to thank everyone for your support and let you know that weaning went really well and I'm officially done nursing! I didn't get sick - yay!
Great Amanda! I will need to learn from you guys in the future! No kids yet but will eventually:)
